The a great thing about having auto car insurance coverage is that you can rest assured that your vehicle will be repaired or replaced if you are involved in an accident.  Still, if you have never been involved in an accident before, you may be uncertain about how to file an auto car insurance claim.  While your policy should provide you with some information about how to go about filing a claim, it can still seem a bit overwhelming and confusing when the time comes – particularly since you will be under a great deal of stress and worry after the accident occurs.  Therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with how to file an auto car insurance claim before the time comes.  This way, if an accident were to occur, you would know precisely what needs to be done to handle the claim as quickly as possible.

Step #1:  Contact Your Auto Car Insurance Company

The first step to filing a claim is to simply contact your auto car insurance company.  You should have received a card from your auto car insurance company containing your policy information as well as the phone number to call if you are involved in an accident.  If you have misplaced this card, contact your insurance agent and ask for the number you need to call.

Step #2:  Provide a Statement

After you contact your auto car insurance company, you will be asked to provide a statement about the accident to your insurance company.  In some cases, you will be able to simply provide your statement over the phone. With the rising number of fraudulent insurance claims, however, you might be asked to provide your statement while attached to a lie detector or to provide documentation about your claims.  The more details you provide to the auto car insurance company and the more documents you provide, the smoother the process will be.  Therefore, it is a good idea to write down as much detail as possible right after the accident.  That way, you won’t forget any important details when the time comes to provide your statement to your auto car insurance company.

Step #3:  Save All Paperwork

Finally, it is important to save all bills, letters and other paperwork that has to do with your claim.  This way, you have documented proof of any purchases you have made or promises that were made to you by your insurance company.  It is a good idea to hang onto this documentation even after the claim has been settled in case problems arise down the road.
