Understanding How 4×4 Modifications Affect Auto Insurance Costs

4x4 insurance quote If you have a 4×4 vehicle, you may be considering making some modifications to it. The practice of making modifications to these vehicles has become quite popular over the last few years, but many do not realize the potential effect of making these modifications on their auto insurance costs. For that reason, Adrian Flux Insurance Services has recently sent out a press release to provide drivers with more information about 4×4 modifications and how they can affect their insurance costs.

“The first thing to do is to check that your insurer is OK with modifications,” Gerry Bucke from Flux said in the press release. “Many mainstream companies won’t cover a modified vehicle of any sort, but there are plenty of specialists who will. Obvsiously, any mods must be safe – and that’s the responsibility of the policyholder. We recommend anyone fitting their own modifications gets them double-checked by a professional, just to be sure.”

According to the press release, there are three broad groups of modifications that are made on 4×4 vehicles. These include:

· Luxury – includes items such as DVD screens, leather interiors and fancy steering wheels, all which generally do not lead to an increase in insurance costs
· LPG conversions – this type of modification is most popular in models with big engines and, when professionally installed, usually does not lead to an increase in insurance cost
· Off-Roading (also called green-laning) modifications – includes tires, wheels, under-body protection and raised suspensions, all of which may lead to an increase in insurance costs

“Enthusiasts who are into green-laning should double check that there insurance policy covers it,” continued Bucke. “But as far as the mods are concerned, unless they make a significant impact on the vehicle’s value or performance, then the insurance shouldn’t be affected much, if it all. Fitting a bigger engine or modifying the performance in any other way may affect insurance costs, depending on what performance gains are achieved.”
