If you are looking to save a little money on your auto insurance, you will be happy to know that there are several things that you can do to make it happen.  With the current state of our economy, an increasing number of consumers are looking for ways to cut back on their expenses.  Whereas you may not have given much thought to your car insurance bill in the past, now is the time to really start looking into alternatives that will help you keep the coverage you need while also keeping more money in your pocket.

Changing Deductibles

One way to save money on your auto insurance is to make changes to your deductible.  By increasing the amount of your deductible, which is the amount you have to pay before receiving insurance benefits, you can significantly decrease the amount of your insurance premium.  Of course, you don’t want to make your deductible so high that you cannot afford to pay it if disaster should strike, but increasing your deductible to $1,000 or $1,500 may be a wise financial decision.

Trim the Fat

President Obama keeps talking about trimming the fat on bills being considered in Congress, so why not follow his lead?  Optional coverage such as towing and labor and rental insurance can drive up the cost of your monthly premiums.  Take a closer look at these extras and see if you can do without.  This may even include dropping your collision and comprehensive coverage so you are only covering the state minimum requirement.  If you are driving an older vehicle or one that his worth less than $1,000, you are not doing yourself any favors by paying a higher premium for the extra coverage.

Look Into Discounts

Many insurance companies offer special discounts for those that meet the requirements.  Yet, many drivers are unaware of these discount programs.  Talk to your insurance rep and ask if there are any discounts available, such as low-mileage discounts or discounts for having antitheft or safety devices installed in your vehicle.  You may also be able to qualify for a lower rate if you keep your vehicle in a garage, so be sure to let the insurance company know if you have one.

Shop Around

You just might be surprised by the amount of money you can save when you shop around.  Not only should you compare the prices being offered by various insurance companies, you should also shop around for a vehicle that will help you obtain lower rates.  Avoid purchasing vehicles that are prone to being stolen or that require expensive repairs, as this will further increase your insurance costs.
