Getting the Most from Your Car Insurance Coverage

Saturday, November 8th, 2008 10:39 am

Everyone knows that having car insurance is a good idea.  And, of course, the law requires us to carry a certain amount of coverage in order to legally drive.  At the same time, car insurance can be costly to carry.  But, if you are going to carry coverage, don’t you want to get the most out of it while also paying as little as possible?  By keeping these tips in mind, you can get the most from your coverage.

Tip #1:  Extras May Be Worth It

When it comes to car insurance, there are many extras that you can add on to your policy that cost very little and may just be worth the extra expense.  Gap insurance, for example, will protect you if your vehicle is totaled and you owe more on the car than its current value.  At the same time, the cost of adding gap insurance is minimal.  Therefore, it is usually a good idea to add this coverage if you owe more on your car than it is currently worth.  Other extras that may be worth adding on include rental reimbursement, roadside assistance and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.  Even comprehensive coverage can often be added on for very little cost.

Tip #2:  Shop Around

In order to get the best rates, make sure to shop around among various car insurance companies.  You just might be surprised by the difference in rates offered by different companies, so the time you spend shopping around and comparing quotes is well worth it.

Tip #3:  Don’t Let it Lapse

Allowing your car insurance policy to lapse will end up costing you more in the long run because insurance companies view drivers with a license who don’t have insurance as being irresponsible.  Therefore, if you allow your policy to lapse, you will likely pay more when it comes time to get new coverage.  So, make sure you have a new policy in place before you cancel the old one.

Tip #4:  Consider What Affects Your Rates

There are many things that determine your car insurance rates and the guidelines used by each company are different.  Nonetheless, factor that will certainly have an impact on your rate will include the make and model of your vehicle, your driving record, your age and your geographic location.  So, make sure to keep these factors in mind when selecting a vehicle as well as when picking a car insurance company.
