You have probably heard the stereotype that women are worse drivers than men.  All you have to do is get in a vehicle with a man and he will likely find that he automatically assumes every bad driver on the road is a woman.  In fact, even women tend to buy into the stereotype at times.  But, is there really truth behind the stereotype that women are worse drivers than men?  Is there really any difference between the sexes?

Looking at Insurance Rates

One good way to compare the driving habits of men and women is to look at car insurance rates.  The reality is that women tend to receive lower insurance rates than men, but is this really because they are safer drivers?  Everyone knows that those with safer driving records are more likely to enjoy lower rates, so logic would dictate that women are indeed safer drivers than men and are rewarded by car insurance companies for their excellent record of safety.  Of course, the argument can be made that women simply enjoy lower rates because they tend to purchase more practical vehicles that qualify for lower insurance rates.  Or, they may receive lower rates because they tend to drive fewer miles than men and, therefore, they qualify for discounted rates.  But, are these the actual reasons behind the lower rates?

Considering the Statistics

Statistically, women as a whole are involved in less automobile accidents than their male counterparts.  In addition, when women are in accidents, the costs associated with the accidents tend to be less than those of men.  Many experts claim that women are also guilty of fewer traffic violations.  When put together to form the “big picture,” these facts have helped women enjoy lower insurance rates than men.

Despite the statistics, this doesn’t necessarily mean that women are “better” drivers.  After all, men tend to purchase more luxury vehicles and high-end sports cars when compared to women, which automatically means one of their accidents will likely cost more to repair than when a women gets in an accident.  This fact serves to reinforce the stereotype that men are more interested in having a nice car than women.  In addition, men may very well drive more often than women because of their love for their cars, which thereby increases their chances of getting into an accident.

So, who really is the better driver?  It is hard to know for sure.  But, when it comes to insurance rates, women certainly have the advantage.
