UK’s First Solar-Powered Car Makes a Road Trip
Friday, October 10th, 2008 2:41 pmA small group of engineering students from Cambridge University’s Engineering Department has built the first solar-powered car in the UK. In addition, not only did the students create a solar-powered car that is fully functional, they even drove it for a total of f1014 miles in just one week.
The solar car, which has a strange shape that looks much like a piece of chiclet gum, drove all the way from London to John O’Groats. Getting prepared for the trip wasn’t so easy, however, as the students had a difficult time finding an insurance company that would provide them with coverage for their trip. According to a press release (http://www.prweb.com/releases/2008/10/prweb1411724.htm), however, the students finally found coverage through Adrian Flux.
Adrian Flux specializes in providing coverage on vehicles that are difficult to cover, but this was the first time the company had been approached to cover a solar-powered vehicle. Nonetheless, so long as the vehicle is street legal, the company can generally come through - and it certainly did for this road trip!
Despite Britain’s lack of regular sunshine, the solar-powered CUER Affinity was able to complete the trip - though, thanks to the dull and rainy weather the students encountered along the way, the car did have to make a few temporary stops in order to get charged back up again
