Are you a fan of shows such as “Pimp My Ride?”  If so, you may be thinking about pimping your own ride.  Yet, when you add extras to your vehicle in order to give it more personality and style, you may find that your car insurance rates will skyrocket.  Therefore, it is a good idea to maintain communication with your car insurance company in order to make sure you don’t pimp your ride so much that you cannot afford to keep it covered.

Contacting Your Car Insurance Company

Before you start pimping out your ride, it is best to contact your car insurance company first.  This way, you can learn more about what your car insurance company covers and what it does not cover.  You may find that your car insurance company is not willing to cover your car at all after it has been all pimped out.  Or, you may discover that certain additions will not be covered.  By having a clear understanding of what your car insurance company will cover and what it will not cover, you will be able to make better decisions about what you add to your car.

Weighing the Costs

Even of your car insurance company is willing to cover all of the modifications you want to make to your vehicle, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is affordable for you.  Therefore, you should find out how much it will cost for you to have the extra coverage and how the coverage will be added to your policy.  For example, it may only entail adding an endorsement to your collision and comprehensive coverage that specifically covers your additional parts.  It is important, however, to make sure the amount of coverage provided is equivalent to the value of your additional car parts.  If not, you might want to do a bit of shopping around and see if you can find a different car insurance company that will provide you with the amount of coverage you need.

Staying Safe

Safety is also important when customizing your car.  Therefore, you should make certain the parts you are installing are properly installed and that they won’t impede your driving in any way.  In most cases, it is best to have customized parts added on by a professional in order to make sure they are safely installed.  In fact, your car insurance company may require the parts to be installed professionally in order to be covered.
