You might be surprised to find that the top ten most stolen vehicles in the United States remains somewhat consistent from year to year, with older vehicles taking the majority of the slots on the list.  As you search the market for a used vehicle, it is important for you to know the vehicles that are on the top ten list for previous years.  After all, if you purchase one of these most frequently stolen vehicles, you are putting yourself at a greater risk of going outside to an empty garage or parking lot.  Similarly, car insurance agencies receive these top ten lists and often adjust their insurance rates accordingly.  Therefore, if you want to save yourself the heartache of having your car stolen and the financial strain of paying extra in car insurance, you might want to avoid these cars if at all possible.

2005 Statistics

CCC Information Services, otherwise referred to as simply CCC, reports that the top ten list of most frequently stolen vehicles in 2005 were:

  • 2001 BMW M Roadster
  • 1998 Acura Integra
  • 2004 Mercury Marauder
  • 1999 Acura Integra
  • 1995 Acura Integra
  • 2002 Audi S4
  • 1996 Acura Integra
  • 1997 Acura Integra
  • 2001 Acura Integra
  • 2000 Jaguar XJR

The National Insurance Crime Bureau, on the other hand, places these vehicles in the top ten for 2005:

  • 1995 Honda Civic
  • 1989 Toyota Camry
  • 1991 Honda Accord
  • 1994 Dodge Caravan
  • 1994 Chevrolet C/K 1500
  • 1997 Ford F-150 Series Pickup
  • 2003 Dodge Ram Pickup
  • 1990 Acura Integra
  • 1988 Toyota Pickup
  • 1991 Nissan Sentra

These lists differ because the National Insurance Crime Bureau does not consider how many of these types of vehicles are insured relative to the number of thefts.  The CCC, on the other hand, take this information into account.  When it comes to determining your insurance rates, the list compiled by the National Insurance Crime Bureau is the one your insurance company considers.
