The Top 4 Auto Insurance Providers in the U.S.
Saturday, March 29th, 2008 5:53 pmWhen purchasing car insurance, you will find that there are literally dozens of auto insurance companies available to select from. While each company has its pros and cons, there are four companies that consistently make it to the top of the list for most consumers:
- Esurance.com
- GEICO
- Progressive
- Nationwide
Esurance.com
Esurance has been around since 1998, though the company was originally founded under the name SiliconSierra Holdings Inc. Its name changed in December of 1999 when the company launched its website and began writing personal auto insurance. The company really started taking off in 2006, however, when it became recognized as one of the United States’ fastest growing auto insurance companies.
Esurance coverage is not available in every state, with 28 states currently being served by the company. One unique aspect of Esurance is the fact that the site lists competitor’s rates and allows site visitors to buy policies from the competition through their site. The company also takes pride in being eco-friendly and is involved in a number of environmental activities.

GEICO
GEICO, which is more formally known as the Government Employees Insurance Company, has been in the insurance business since 1937. Best known for its gecko mascot, the company is very popular and provided coverage to an astounding 10 million vehicles and 8 million customers in 2007. GEICO insurance coverage is available in every state except for Massachusetts as well as in the District of Columbia.
When GEICO was first founded, it focused on providing insurance to military personnel and government employees. Today, GEICO is the fourth-largest provider of private passenger auto insurance.
Progressive
The Progressive Corporation was founded in 1937 and provides a variety of insurance options, including auto insurance for private passenger vehicles. The company makes it easy for drivers to navigate through its website, allowing them to search for an online insurance quote according to different categories. These categories include custom coverage, plus coverage, recommended coverage, economy coverage, and minimum coverage. The company reviews a variety of different pieces of information, such as driver history, make and model of the vehicle, and the gender of the driver. The company currently serves more than 10 million customers.
Nationwide
Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company & Affiliated Companies, which is known more simply as Nationwide, has been around since 1925. At this time, the company was known as the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and started with just 1,000 policyholders. All of the policyholders at this time were from Ohio, but the company has since expanded to provide coverage to car owners all over the country. The company also makes it easy to get a quote and considers factors such as accidents and minor traffic violations when determining rates.
