5 Steps to Follow When Involved in an Auto Accident

5 Steps to Follow When Involved in an Auto AccidentIf you are involved in an accident, your adrenaline will likely start pumping and you may find it difficult to remain calm.  Still, despite your emotions, it is important to remain in control when involved in an accident and to remain as calm as possible.  In addition, it is important to know precisely what to do when involved in an accident in order to provide yourself with the greatest chance of having the accident resolved in the best way possible.  To that end, if you are involved in an accident, you should adhere to the following steps if possible…

Step #1:  Get Out Of Danger

If at all possible, the first step to take is to get yourself and anyone else involved in the accident out of any physical danger.  Depending upon the severity of the accident, this may not be possible or it may not be safe to move.  If it is possible, however, it is important to make certain everyone is safe.

Step #2:  Call 911

If an ambulance is needed, call 911 ass soon as possible.  This is not a time to quibble over insurance or over who was at fault for the accident.  Rather, make certain the safety and well-being of everyone involved comes first.

Step #3:  Notify the Police

In most states, you are legally required to notify the police when involved in an accident. Even if your state does not have this requirement, contacting the police is a good idea.  This way, a report can be filed and used by your insurance company when trying to determine who was at fault for the accident.

Step #4:  Exchange Information

You and any other drivers involved in the accident should now exchange information, including your names and addresses as well as the names and telephone numbers of your insurance companies.

Step #5:  Contact Your Insurance Company

After exchanging information with the other drivers involved in the accident, you can part ways. You should then contact your insurance company as soon as possible in order to provide the company with information about the accident.  Be certain to cooperate completely wit your insurance company in order to get the claim settled.  If you do not cooperate with the insurance company, you may not be able to receive payment from your insurance company for your losses.

Although being involved in an accident is an emotionally trying experience, remaining calm and following the proper steps can help you reduce the level of stress you experience.
